Kinder Blue
Title: This is me! (Part I)
The Kindy Artwork is a reflection of how the children picture themselves.
We began by showing them a similar Artwork done previously and explained what we needed them to do: draw a picture of their face on a small piece of white card using a black felt tip pen.
They responded enthusiastically and after a practice run, set about the task of drawing their faces. It was wonderful to see the varied results in terms of size, shape and detail. Many didn’t want to draw a nose. We had a few with ears, some freckled faces and some even drew their neck.
Then our team of helpers cut the faces out. Thank you to Catherine Mulcahy for the handwriting all the minature names under each face!
Next the uniform production line swung into action. Using uniforms from the uniform pool (thank you Bridget) we set about cutting up the fabric and ironing on the interface to stiffen the material and prevent fraying. Next we traced the patterns for shirts, shorts and dresses and 65 uniforms were cut out.
James and Viv from Art Smart, helped to decide on the best way to assemble the art work, the maximum size for each window and the right glue to ensure all bits stayed in place. We had much discussion about the colour scheme, bearing in mind this fabulous work was going to someone’s home. Hence the white background !

Title: This is me! (Part II)
Once all details were sorted, the working bee got underway again. Over the course of a few mornings, we assembled 33 little people for Kinder Blue and 32
little people for Kinder Gold.
A little summer dress for girls and a piece of ric-rac for the collar; easy, or so we thought, until the glue came through some of the dresses. A little bit of rework and that was sorted.
Some nimble fingers were the order of the day to fashion a tie from a piece of ribbon and then get it to stay in place. A bit of practice, a few false starts, a tie too long or short, do we tuck it in or leave it out. So many details, but we got there in the end.
The class lists were checked – do we have everyone, have we the right students in the right class, get rid of that nagging doubt in the back of your head that you’ve missed someone !
Then back to Art Smart for another chat to decide on the layout and frame………… and to go against all your original intentions of a white frame !
A big thank you to everyone involved for making this happen. You know who you are.

Cupcakes
JOANNE CARTER
This was quite a labour of love. I originally had the idea of the kids decorating balloons but with all the colours I thought they might have looked more like Easter eggs so the balloons became cupcakes!!!
I simply gave each child a plain white cardboard circle and asked them to to decorate it so it looked like a cupcake. The kids were given a plethora of mediums to work with including paint, felt, ribbon, glitter and stickers to name a few.
There were no rules
I worked with the kids in groups of 2 and 3 at a time. With 60 kids this was quite time consuming and was done over number of days.
The kids were free to design their own cupcake with little instruction and it was amazing to watch their concentration and enthusiasm. All of the kids were very clear about what they wanted to use and how they wanted their cupcake to look.

Part II
I loved that the boys did not shy away from using pinks and sparkles. I also loved that even though they were having fun they all knew when their cakes were ready ....that is finished. They are all the kids work and truly individual.
I then put them in the paddy cake trays and they look good enough to eat!
I think they would be look great hanging in a childs bedroom or a toy room.
I also think the parents and teachers should be proud. Every child was so polite, sweet and gracious .
Well Done Year One
Special thanks to Miss Paris Cotis 2 gold who helped with some of the sessions.

Title: Sunflowers (Part I)
The reason we chose Sunflowers was to give each child the opportunity to do their own Artwork independently but also produce something as a combined work.
We chose Watercolors as it is an easy process. The children first sketched an outline of each flower with pencil, before colouring in the detail.

Title: Sunflowers (Part II)
Two local artists Isabelle and Louise volunteered to came to the school to talk to the children about the subject and show them how to paint.
The children had lots of fun, and did some wonderful artwork.

Title: GoldFish (Part I)
The idea of the little fish actually came about because I loved the story of the “Rainbow Fish” and thought that there was a beautiful message behind the story.
However, it was soon brought to my attention that the idea had been used a couple of years before... So, I decided to keep the idea of little fish but change it to goldfish instead.
The children were so excited and enthusiastic with this idea and so it went ahead !

Title: GoldFish (Part II)
Firstly, the children were given examples of different goldfish to draw and they came up with amazing little fish of their own.
We chose 3 colours to use to paint the fish so that they really looked like little gold fish.. Red, Orange and Yellow.
Then added a little sparkle on some of the fish with tiny gold and red wires. I picked a little boy to help me draw the fish bowls (I feel so bad because I can’t remember his name)
Finally we placed small little pearls above some of the fish so that they looked as though they were blowing bubbles.

Title: Record your Child (Part I)
Why: we wanted to create works that looked visually exciting but where the children did the work themselves. Yr 4 students have an understanding of fashion so we decided on fashion from the 80s.
What was the tecnique used : the children were asked to draw a character. They then cut clothing & accessories from various materials and dressed him/her by pasting pits & pieces onto their own character.
What did the children think of it? They seemed to enjoy the exercise a lot. Especially looking at photos & printouts of people wearing 80s gear! And talking about bands from the 80s!!
What were the options/instructions/parameters given? We showed them some artworks done by yrs 2 & 4 classes previously which used the same design concept. We then showed them photos & printouts of people in 80s fashion.

Title: Record your Child (Part II)
What benefits/lessons did the children learned from it? They learnt how badly their parents dressed when teenagers!! Many of the children thought they wouldn’t be able to do it, but reveled in their work when they saw the collective results!
Who made it happen? Cassie Scougall, Cathy Davis
Consultant (who from outside the school) helped/ donated their time? We decided to use vinyl LP’s for the background, as they are very 80s and the guy in art/frame shop helped us with ideas for putting the characters together over them, as well as ideas for framing.
Of course, none of it would have been possible without the fantastic co-operation we had from the Yr 4 teachers, and the wonderful group of mums who gave up their time to help the kids choose, cut & create – you know who you are – THANK YOU!!!

Title: Origami garden! (Part I)
Our lovely year 5 created origami gardens where butterflies and birds are playing around beautiful flowers and trees.
Origami is Japanese words meaning paper folding. Although there is much speculation as to the origin of origami, Japan seems to have had the most extensive tradition.
Since it wasn’t usual classroom art work, origami seems to be the one which will attract children’s curiosity and give them fun time.
We were divided into 5 groups and made tulips, carnations, calami, trees and butterflies. Then we moved to make yellow birds and leaves all together.
Special origami papers with different colours and patterns were used. Most of objects were made with folding technique only and scissors came in handy for a couple of times to add finishing touch.
Children thoroughly enjoyed transforming those papers into pretty creatures.

Title: Origami garden! (Part II)
It was great pleasure to work with our children and I wish to say big thank you to all year 5, Mrs Morris and Mr Orr for making great art work together.
Lastly, but not the least special thanks to our mums, Sarah Burns, Erica Foyle, Caroline Lee, Mandy Robinson and Cassie Scougall for coming to help out making origami.

Year 6
Title: The Final Year
The Year 6 artwork was inspired by the children’s hopes for their future, their own achievements and their passions.
We had a hoot of a day in the library, throwing balls, singing, dancing and posing with funny faces, moves and props.
The background is a collection of thoughts and lessons that epitomise what we hope every graduate from Sacred Heart will store in their heart and take into their bright and happy futures.
